The tale in the back of paintings is fundamental to the knowledge of it. A 1948 work with the aid of enormously-amassed Goan modernist painter F.N. Souza offered a glimpse into the spiritual imagery of Goa at that point when the country was nonetheless under Portuguese rule.

“Souza become an exceedingly prolific artist throughout his almost seven-decade career. He painted the seminal piece in 1948 and parted with it in 1999, so it was with him for around 50 years before he died in 2002. Souza offered this work to a fellow Goan, a collector with a completely high-quality eye and love for the Konkan kingdom, as Souza had; this painting remained in the personal series for two a long time, she added.
Despite being vocal and crucial about the church, clergy, and corruption in his later years, Souza created many artworks and drawings with religious iconography.
“The title Golgotha in Goa suggests that at the same time as this scene is rooted in Goa, it is a reflection of Golgotha nonetheless. Goa became at the time a Portuguese colony where Catholicism changed into the primary religion, so, probably, elements from the altar at Golgotha were also included in local church buildings,” Sotheby’s stated in its notice at the painting.
Three huge sconces envelop the altar at Golgotha, and gold squares containing icons and paintings make up the history – all flawlessly mirrored inside the present picture it brought.
The mosaic-like painting also traces back to conventional stained glass illustrations discovered in churches. According to an estimate, Golgotha in Goa could be offered upward of $250,000 (around Rs 1.8 crore).
Five canvases by M.F. Husain, semi-abstracted paintings with the aid of Ram Kumar, a Zainul Abedin work from 1970, and an untitled portrayal using S.H. Raza may also feature inside the sale. They are part of a two-day public exhibition in New Delhi until Saturday.
